Suggestion for either a feature of General Winter or one of the other lieutenants for them to have a simulacrum copy of a cherished loved one, similar to Mr. Freeze’s character in the Batman Animated Series and later interpretations of that character.
Having a Pygmalion like character constantly repairing his slowly melting lover or further pushing the Mr. Freeze angle by having the original person encased in ice stasis to prevent them from succumbing to a curse or disease and the copy has been living their life instead but has been unable to grow and change, so whilst the dutiful mage has now grown old as they have tried to cure the sickness, the copy has remained young.
